Museums, churches and mills in Woodbridge are throwing open their doors on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days.
Heritage Open Days is an annual celebration of our historic places, giving people the chance to see buildings that are not normally open to the public, or to enjoy heritage attractions free of charge.
Heritage Open Day events in Woodbridge include free admission to the Suffolk Punch Heavy Horse Museum and the Town Museum, both on the historic Market Hill.
The Suffolk Punch museum tells the story of this much-loved breed, with oil paintings, watercolours, photographs and memorabilia connected with these magnificent Suffolk horses.
The Woodbridge museum is open 11am – 5pm Saturday 12th and Noon – 4pm on Sunday 13th September. The Woodbridge Town Museum traces the history of the Woodbridge from the Roman era to the present day. The museum is open 10am – 4pm Saturday and Sunday.
The Market Hill is probably best-known for the iconic Shire Hall. On Sunday 13th September the building will be open to the public from 10am until 4pm, housing a fascinating exhibition which celebrates the history of the Red Cross in Woodbridge.
Nestled between Market Hill and the river, Quay Church, on Quay Street is a grade-2 listed non-conformist church. This will be open on Saturday from 10am – 5pm.
On the scenic waterfront, the Tide Mill will be open 11am – 5pm Saturday and Sunday. The Mill is thought to be have been the last working tide mill in England, houses an exhibition, plus the chance to explore three floors of tide mill, and don’t miss the huge waterwheel outside.
Heritage Open Days offer a rare opportunity to take a peek at hidden treasures. There’s lots going on in Woodbridge over the weekend of 12th and 13th September – a credit-crunch busting heritage weekend.
