Frank Knights memorial fund

Tell a friend

8th May 2009
by Chris Walker, Town Clerk

Frank Knights - photograph copyright (c) Michael RinesEarlier in the year a small committee of people (supported by Woodbridge Town Council) discussed how to remember Frank Knights who died at the end of 2008.  The committee made up of Councillor Stan Hewitt, Professor Ted Evans and Mr Peter Clay felt that whilst many people had attended Franks committal service at the Ipswich crematorium, there would be many more who wished to pay their respects, in some form, to Frank.

It was decided to hold a remembrance type event, (which was held at the Woodbridge Community Hall in January 2009 and attended by over 300 people), to seek funding to purchase and erect a small plaque to remember Frank and Christine Knights and to erect it close to their former home at Bass Dock.

Over the weeks in early 2009, many cheques poured into the Town Council and much more funding was collected than required. A brass plaque was purchased, along with a magnificent silver cup to be presented to the Regatta Committee and to be awarded each year at the Regatta as “the Frank and Christine Knights Sculling Cup”. Funds remained at £800 and a donation in Franks name was given to the RNLI.
