Ferry Quay is so named because, in past times, the high-water ferry to the Sutton side of the river Deben, was operated from the end of this quay. The remains of what I have always assumed was the landing stage on the Sutton side can be clearly seen at low tides.

11. High tide over Bass's Dock, Woodbridge, October 2006.
The rowing boat is on the dockside, where you would normally walk.
You can just see the tops of the bollards, between the rowing boat
and the larger boats that are moored in Bass's Dock.
